Cosmic Ray Production of Li by Virialization Shocks in the Early Milky Way
نویسندگان
چکیده
The energy dissipated by virialization shocks during hierarchical structure formation of the Galaxy can exceed that injected by concomitant supernova (SN) explosions. Cosmic rays (CRs) accelerated by such shocks may therefore dominate over SNe in the production of Li through α+α fusion without co-producing Be and B. This process can give a more natural account of the observed Li abundance in metal-poor stars compared to standard SN CR scenarios. Future searches for correlations between the Li abundance and the kinematic properties of halo stars may constitute an important probe of how the Galaxy and its halo formed. Furthermore, Li may offer interesting clues to some fundamental but currently unresolved issues in cosmology and structure formation on sub-galactic scales.

Cosmic Ray Production of Li by Structure Formation Shocks in the Early Milky Way: a Fossil Record of Dissipative Processes during Galaxy Formation
While the abundances of Be and B observed in metal-poor halo stars are well explained as arising from spallation of CNO-enriched cosmic rays (CRs) accelerated by supernova (SN) shocks, accounting for the observed Li in such stars with SN CRs is more problematic. Here we propose that gravitational shocks induced by infalling and merging sub-Galactic clumps during hierarchical structure formation...

متن کاملCosmic Ray Production of Li by Structure Formation Shocks in the Early Galaxy
We discuss the production of the element Li in the early Galaxy by cosmic rays accelerated at structure formation shocks, driven by the hierarchical merging of sub-Galactic halos during Galaxy formation. The salient features of this scenario are discussed and compared with observations of Li in metal-poor halo stars, including a recent Subaru HDS result on the star HD140283. Some unique predict...
متن کاملEnergisation of interstellar media and cosmic ray production by jets from X-ray binaries
Drawing on recent estimates of the power of jets from X-ray binary systems as a function of X-ray luminosity, combined with improved estimates of the relevant Log(N)Log(LX) luminosity functions, we calculate the total energy input to the interstellar medium (ISM) from these objects. The input of kinetic energy to the ISM via jets is dominated by those of the black hole systems, in contrast to t...
متن کاملEvolution of Lithium in the Milky Way
We adopt up-to-date Li yields from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in order to study the temporal evolution of this element in the solar neighbourhood. Several lithium stellar sources are considered besides the AGBs: Type II supernovae (SNe), novae, low-mass giants. Galactic cosmic ray (GCR) nucleosynthesis is taken into account as well. We conclude that AGB stars do not substantially contr...
